The History of the Park
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park opened in 1977, but the history of the estate reaches back to Norman times. Bretton and West Bretton were listed in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book of 1086, when the land was settled by the de Bretton family.
William, who built the three-storey, nine-bay Palladian limestone mansion, was Matthews grandson (the new owner of the land, which was passed onto him in 1675 by the Bretton who died) that still stands on the estate today.
More buildings, features and follies were added throughout the 18th century, including the sandstone St Bartholomew’s Chapel in 1744, the deer shelter and the pheasantries, houses for William’s gamekeepers, in 1748.
The landscape is vast and beautiful by itself but the sculptures make it all that more extraordinary, people can browse at 20th century artists that have produced the exhibits.
It’s a great way to take in culture and beautiful landscapes. Its layout won many awards and makes the park one of the world’s best exhibitions. Sculptures are embedded into the land organically. And sometimes overgrow the sculptures. And sometimes overgrow the sculptures besides the banks of gentle flowing rivers. They have won awards for best attractions in Yorkshire two years running.

A video installation is a modern form of art mixed media and an effective way of presenting work. This captures the audience with the different discordant sounds and powerful effects that creates a sinister tone. A mixture of sounds, imagery and different video footage sequenced together entices the audience and involves them in the video but it also triggers off the senses of the people who watch it.
I have created my own video that would be presented in the chapel at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in a darkened room with large surround sound speakers to create effect. I believe all these factors tied together will have a powerful impact on the audience and trigger different emotions whilst they watch it.
